In a bold move to revolutionize India's cotton industry, Union Minister for Textiles, Giriraj Singh, revealed on 10 Feb 2025 that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will spearhead productivity trials across various districts. This initiative aims to identify one district in each state to implement trials focused on enhancing cotton yields.
Singh emphasized that the government’s push is grounded in adopting global best practices to elevate India's cotton production to match international standards. Currently, countries like Brazil, China, Australia, and Russia yield 2,000 to 2,200 kilograms of cotton per hectare, while India’s average stands at a modest 450-500 kg per hectare. The targeted increase in per hectare yield is expected to propel India into the global cotton league, making a significant impact on its textile sector.
The government’s efforts extend beyond mere productivity improvements. The overarching goal is to elevate India’s textile market to a whopping USD 350 billion by 2030, a vision that aligns with the nation’s ambition to become a textile powerhouse. To further bolster this growth, the upcoming Bharat Tex exhibition is expected to witness major global participation, opening doors for collaboration, innovation, and investment.
With these strategic steps, the Ministry of Textiles aims to not only increase cotton yields but also enhance the country’s global position in textile manufacturing, ensuring India’s growth as a formidable player in the global market.
