Weaving Intelligence into Fabric: Textile Sector Embarks on AI-Led Transformation

Rooted in centuries of tradition, the textile sector is now embracing a digital evolution powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Across vibrant production hubs like Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, AI is reshaping the manufacturing value chain from design and stitching to spinning and supply chain management. What once depended entirely on artisanal hands is now being supported by smart machines and intelligent systems, creating a synergy of heritage and innovation.

Tiruppur, long celebrated for its Knitwear legacy, is emerging as a beacon of this transformation. According to the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association, AI integration has improved production efficiency by 10%, contributing to an impressive milestone crossing Rs. 40,000 crore in knitwear exports in FY25. CAD-CAM systems, predictive maintenance tools, and automated precision stitching are not only driving output but also tackling long-standing challenges like labour shortages and wastage.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country are also adopting smart technologies. SaaS platforms such as Reverse Resource are enabling circular production models and traceable supply chains. Even small units are turning to tools like ChatGPT and Canva to stay competitive and digitally visible in a rapidly evolving global marketplace.

Global buyers including retail giants like Walmart, GAP, and Marks & Spencer are taking notice, pushing local firms to upscale their infrastructure with AI-powered systems. Yet, rather than replacing the workforce, industry leaders emphasise a hybrid model where technology enhances skills, empowers labour, and stitches a sustainable, inclusive future for the sector.
