Kashmir’s timeless craftsmanship continues to mesmerize the world, with its exquisite shawls, carpets, and handicrafts driving exports worth 2,567 crore over the past two financial years and the first three quarters of the current fiscal. Despite global uncertainties, the region’s handicraft industry stands resilient, with projections set to cross 3,000 crore by the end of this financial year, according to the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir.
At the heart of this success are the magnificent Kani and Sozni shawls, which alone have accounted for 1,105 crore in exports, while the globally cherished hand-knotted carpets have fetched 728 crore over the past three years. Other treasured crafts, including crewel embroidery, papier-mâché, chain stitch, and intricate wood carvings, continue to captivate international markets, reinforcing Kashmir’s status as a hub of artistic brilliance.
To further empower artisans and promote exports, the government has introduced a subsidy scheme offering a 10% incentive on the total export volume, with a maximum reimbursement of 5 crore for registered exporters. Additionally, innovative prototypes and contemporary packaging solutions from the Design Studio at the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and the School of Designs and Craft Development Institute are helping artisans reach luxury markets worldwide.
Recognizing the need for artisan welfare, the government has launched multiple flagship initiatives, including the Credit Card Scheme, Mudra loans, Financial Assistance for Cooperatives, the Karkhandar Scheme, and educational scholarships for artisans' children. Under the National Wool Policy, 100 weavers have been selected to receive modern steel carpet looms worth 43.70 lakh, with an additional 250 looms proposed for the next fiscal year to enhance efficiency and working conditions.
A strong emphasis has also been placed on empowering female artisans, with 17,182 women trained in various crafts at 432 training centers over the last four years. To support their journey, a stipend of 36.27 crore has been disbursed, providing financial security and fostering skill development under the Karkhandar Scheme.
