Assam Chief Minister Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised serious concerns about a significant surge in illegal immigration from Bangladesh. He directly linked this alarming trend to the neighboring country's current economic difficulties and the collapse of its previously robust textile industry.
The economic collapse in Bangladesh, exacerbated by the closure of its textile sector, has triggered a significant surge in illegal immigration into India. This trend is evident across states, with Tripura recently reporting the detention of nearly 1,500 Bangladeshi nationals. While the Border Security Force (BSF) is actively engaged in border security, Assam faces a similar challenge. Daily apprehensions range from 20 to 25 infiltrators, indicating the scale of the problem. However, the true extent of illegal immigration likely surpasses these figures, as a significant number of individuals successfully evade detection and enter the country undetected.
Chief Minister stressed the importance of increased border security, revealing that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called upon all border state leaders to strengthen their security measures.
"During the North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting, Home Minister advised us to maintain a high level of alert along the borders. We are taking his advice seriously and actively working to enhance our security network," stated Chief Minister.
Assam Police recently apprehended and pushed back 22 Bangladeshi infiltrators, underscoring the state's firm stance against illegal immigration. This action follows months of consistent warnings from Chief Minister Sarma regarding the significant challenges posed by illegal infiltration.
On September 28th, Assam Police successfully pushed back 17 Bangladeshi nationals, including nine children, who were attempting to illegally enter the state. This incident further demonstrates Assam's unwavering stance against illegal immigration. Since August, following the ouster of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, over 180 Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended and subsequently pushed back from the state.
