Bangladesh's garment sector has shown a strong upward trajectory in the United States market, recording an impressive 21.6 percent growth in apparel exports during the January to May 2025 period. The total value of these exports reached 3.53 billion dollars, a remarkable increase when compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. This performance not only reaffirms Bangladesh’s competitiveness but also highlights its adaptive approach in a changing global trade environment.
As per data released by the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), the overall apparel imports by the United States rose modestly by 7.06 percent, totaling 31.70 billion dollars during the five-month window. While many nations compete in the American fashion and basics segment, Bangladesh has managed to stand out with consistent value and volume performance.
Other leading exporters such as India, Vietnam, Cambodia and Pakistan also registered strong growth in the same market. However, China experienced a decline of over 10 percent, indicating a potential reshuffling in sourcing strategies among US buyers. In terms of volume, Bangladesh recorded a 21.03 percent increase, with only Pakistan outpacing it at 25.65 percent.
Interestingly, despite this volume surge, the average unit price of Bangladeshi apparel saw only a slight rise of 0.47 percent. This reflects the ongoing pricing pressure felt across Asian apparel hubs, with nations like Pakistan and Cambodia even seeing a drop in per-piece prices.
Mohiuddin Rubel, a noted industry voice, expressed optimism on this development, stating that Bangladesh’s apparel industry is navigating challenges effectively while staying relevant in the highly competitive US market. The country’s push towards value-added products, sustainable practices, and market diversification seems to be yielding visible results setting a hopeful tone for the months ahead.
