The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has retained its pressing estimate for the 2024–25 season at 312.40 lakh bales of 170 kilograms each, equivalent to 327.83 lakh running bales of 162 kilograms. The forecast, compiled from 11 state cotton associations and trade sources nationwide, signals a steady production outlook for India’s cotton sector, which began its new season on October 1, 2024.
According to CAI’s latest assessment, the total cotton supply for the 2024–25 season is projected at 392.59 lakh bales, including pressing of 312.40 lakh bales, imports of 41 lakh bales, and an opening stock of 39.19 lakh bales. Consumption is estimated at 314 lakh bales, while exports are expected to moderate to 18 lakh bales, a sharp fall from 28.36 lakh bales last season.
The closing stock by September 2025 is anticipated to touch 60.59 lakh bales, considerably higher than last year’s 39.19 lakh bales, suggesting improved domestic availability. The estimates were finalized at CAI’s Crop Committee meeting held virtually on October 15, 2025, attended by 21 members representing major cotton-producing regions.
Cotton imports are expected to rise significantly by 25.80 lakh bales over last year, reflecting the changing dynamics of global supply and pricing. The dip in exports, meanwhile, highlights growing domestic consumption and subdued international demand.
With stable production and balanced supply conditions, industry experts view the 2024–25 season as one of steady growth and cautious optimism. The cotton sector continues to play a vital role in supporting India’s textile ecosystem, providing a strong foundation for both domestic mills and export-oriented manufacturers.
